Master's degree in Applied Mathematics

What's a focus area?

It is a field in applied mathematics on which students can focus.

It is composed of different courses which can be freely chosen.

What's an application area?

It is a group of lectures to a specific topic.

It has to be chosen at the beginning of the studies.

It is listed in the course catalogue.

Description

Modern mathematics is driven by the need for abstract and quantitative modeling and prediction in engineering and the sciences.

New disciplines are shaped by employing sophisticated mathematical models and are continuously joining established areas that use mathematical formalism in modeling and prediction. An increasing number of industries employ mathematical models and techniques in their research and product development.

The range and sophistication of mathematical tools brought to bear in industry and the sciences is increasing.

Judicious development and use of mathematical models in industry and the sciences requires education of mathematicians who are able to bring to bear mathematical methods and interact with experts in application areas outside of mathematics.

The Master's degree in Applied Mathematics responds to this need.

It is based on the following principles:

  1. Mathematical modeling requires mastery of advanced mathematical and numerical methods from several core mathematical disciplines.
Mathematicians trained in the ETH Applied Mathematics Curriculum will be first and foremost strong mathematicians with excellent command of mathematical modeling and computational techniques.

  2. Teaching in Applied Mathematics will be performed by the ETH Applied Mathematics Faculty.

It is composed of faculty from D-MATH of ETH and faculty from those departments of ETH and UNIZH which are current application areas in the Curriculum.

Requirements

The requirements for the Master’s degree in Applied Mathematics are similar to the Master's degree in Mathematics, but students are required to focus to a certain extent on an area of Applied Mathematics called focus area. In addition, students acquire substantial knowledge on one application area. Minimum requirements include

The programme concludes with a Master’s thesis (30 credits).
Graduates hold the academic title Master of Science ETH in Applied Mathematics.
