In general, Economics studies how individuals and societies seek to satisfy needs and wants. Based on the scarcity of resources given the preference structure of individuals, it analyses and describes the production, allocation and consumption of goods and services. The analyses are carried out by means of theoretical models, that are strongly based on mathematics, or using empirical methods such as econometric estimations.
The focus of economics at ETH Zurich lies on energy economics, resource economics, innovation economics and technical change, dynamic economic theory, sustainable development, global economic interdependencies, applied macroeconomics and business cycle research.
