March 3, 2010 - The ETH board has appointed Prof. Norbert Hungerbühler of the University of Fribourg professor of mathematics and education at ETH Zurich. He will join our department on 1 August 2010.
3. März 2010 - Der ETH-Rat hat Prof. Norbert Hungerbühler von der Universität Freiburg zum ordentlichen Professor für Mathematik und Ausbildung an der ETH Zürich ernannt. Er wird sein Amt an unserem Departement am 1. August 2010 antreten.
December 10, 2009 - The ETH board elected Prof. Robert Weismantel, currently professor for mathematical opimization at the Otto-von-Guericke University of Magdeburg, as new professor in our department. He will join us in May 2010 and he will be a member of the Institute for Operations Research (IFOR).
October 20, 2009 - Professor Robert D. MacPherson, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, has received the first Heinz Hopf Price. He also delivered the Hopf Lectures 2009 "How Nature Tiles Space" on October 20 and 22.
October 7, 2009 - President Obama named Professor Rudolf Kalman, professur emeritus of our department, as recipient of the National Medal of Science for his work on the Kalman Filter.
September 2009 - Four members of our department have been selected as invited speakers at the International Congress of Mathematicians 2010 in Bangalore: Freddy Delbaen, Manfred Einsiedler, Sara van de Geer and Tom Ilmanen.
May 09, 2009 - Professor Mikhail Gromov, Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques (IHES, Bures-sur-Yvette) and Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences (New York University), Winner of the Abel Prize 2009, has delivered the Pauli Lectures 2009 with the title "Geometry, Topology and Spectra of Non-Linear Spaces of Maps".
November 25, 2008 - Prof. Dr. h. c. mult. Beno Eckmann died at the age of 91. He has been professor of mathematics at ETH from 1948 until his retirement in 1984. He continued his research activities at our department until shortly before his death. He has made unique contributions to the field of mathematics by his research, his teaching and by the foundation of the Institute for Mathematical Research (FIM) which he headed for 20 years. November 22, 2008 - In appreciation of essential and inspiring contribution to number theory, algebra and analysis, as well as of extensive influence on mathematics the world over, ETH Zurich awarded an honorary degree to Professor Enrico Bombieri, Institute of Advanced Studies, Princeton, USA. On November 24 Professor Bombieri gave a lecture for the general public on "The mathematical truth" [Slides: PDF, 6.1 MB].
