New results and ideas in the analysis of Willmore surfaces
Recently, Tristan Rivière was able to recast the Willmore equation
(i.e. the Euler-Lagrange equation variationally obtained from the
Willmore functional) in elliptic divergence form. This new formulation
opens the way to a sharper analysis, and eventually a deeper
understanding, of Willmore surfaces. The goal of this talk will be to
expose Rivière's ideas, the ensuing results, as well as to present new
research directions. The material presented is joint work with Tristan
Rivière.
